(Chicago has its own tenants' rights law)

(The law is different in the suburbs and unincorporated Cook County)
     
 
Did the owner of your apartment live in the same building as you? *

(Some owner occupied buildings are exempt from Chicago law)
     
 
How many apartments, including the one you lived in, were in the building? *

These are generally excluded from Chicago law.

 
Let's address possible violations at move-in:

 
How much was your security deposit? *

 
How long ago was your move-in date? *


 
Did you receive a security deposit receipt at the time you paid your deposit? *


 
Did your lease list the name and address of the bank where your deposit is held? *


 
Next are questions about move-out:

 
How much of your deposit was returned within 45 days of move out? *


 
Did you receive an itemized list of damages within 30 days of move out? *


 
Did you receive paid receipts for every deduction for property damage within 30 days of the itemized list? *


 
Did your landlord pay you interest on your deposit within 30 days after each year of rental? *

(Chicago landlords have to pay interest yearly)
